The Family Ministry ministers to the spiritual and social needs of families with pre-school and school age families. Our activities aim to encourage fellowship among families with young children and nourish their spirituality.
- Within the Church Sanctuary, we support the child-friendly space called “My Little Church.”
- Throughout the school year, we facilitate the teaching of Liturgy of the Word for school-age children (three age-appropriate groups) during the 9:30 Mass.
- Every Third Sunday, we also organize a family Mass. At this mass, families are encouraged to partake in all the ministries. The Gospel is brought to life by group of young actors.
- During Advent and Holy Week, we organize special family gatherings.
- We also organize occasional social events such as walks, skating, and picnics.
Children’s Liturgy – Hello, St. Joe Families!
August 30, 2015
Welcome back to a new season of Children’s Liturgy at the 9:30 am Mass!
Our first gathering will take place on Sunday, Sept. 27.
These gatherings last about 15-20 minutes during the Liturgy of the Word.
We meet in three groups each Sunday throughout the school year:
–Gr 2-3 and
These friendly gatherings help children express their spirituality and respond to the readings at a level appropriate for their age. We also hope that children will develop a sense of belonging by making friends at church.
Stop by the Welcome Desk to leave your email address, or e-mail Erin Anderson at erin.anderson(at)rogers.com to stay connected.
Our ministry NEEDS VOLUNTEERS NOW to run this most vital and vibrant ministry. Each Sunday, we require seven volunteers, as each group needs a leader/facilitator and an assistant. Our aim is to have 25 people on our team so that each volunteer will only need to help out once a month. We would like to particularly encourage parents to become involved, as it is a unique opportunity to journey with your child. No special previous experience or training is required. We have a set format for our gatherings that is easy to follow, as well as prepared lesson plans. Drop by the Welcome Desk, or contact Erin at erin.anderson(at)rogers.com to sign up and find out more.
Every third Sunday of the month is a family service. On that Sunday, there are no separate sessions for the children, but rather we encourage the children and their families to take part in as many aspects of the celebration as possible. We have a children’s Gospel Players group that proclaims/acts out the gospel. We also encourage children to do a reading (be lector), play a musical instrument or join the family choir. To sign up or learn more, please contact: Robyne Warren (Robyne.warren(at)ocdsb.ca) to become involved in the the Gospel Playes, Jamie Loback (jamieloback(at)yahoo.ca) for information on music and the choir, and Louise Lafond (lafondlc(at)gmail.com) regarding lector participation.
Lastly, please join us on Sunday, Sept. 27 for a “Back to School” brunch. All families are welcome to come downstairs to the hall after the 9:30 am Mass for food, fun and friends. You may bring something to share, but it is by no means necessary. We hope to see your family there!
